Normal pregnancy lasts for around 9 months and is a critical phase for both the woman and the developing foetus. However, some emergency condition may arise in this period which may necessitate laparoscopic or open surgery.
Generally, surgery is avoided in the first trimester as the drugs used during Anaethesia are toxic to the developing foetus. Similarly , in advanced pregnancy during the last trimester, the uterus becomes very bulky obscuring the view of other abdominal organs and hence surgery is difficult. Also , there is a risk of preterm labour in the last months so Surgery is avoided.
The ideal time for a laparoscopic surgery during pregnancy is during the second trimester i.e. between the 4 th and 6 th months. At this time, the risk to the developing foetus and chances of preterm labour are minimal.
